A Fine
Quality Edwardian Brass Central Draught Oil Lamp And Shade
This
"Messengers" oil lamp dates from the early part of the 20th
century and would have been very much the top of their brass range.
It is imposing, tall and very heavy.
The
central draught burner is in good order and is of the type that can
be raised by turning a lever to expose the wick for lighting without
removing shade or chimney. It fits into a drip tray fitted to the
fount top - an unusual feature. I've had a flame spreader specially
made to the correct specifications for the burner. The wick winder
knob has "Messengers Annular 54 CP" inscribed into the ceramic
disc.
The
etched tulip shade is in near perfect condition with just a few of
the usual air bubble flaws - again typical of the period. It shows
virtually no usage marks on the underside which is very unusual.
There
are a few usage scars which are allowed for in the price. The fount
has some denting on one side, personally I don't think this detracts
from the lamp at all and they could be removed by a skilled metal
worker, also there is one chimney clasp missing from the burner -
hardly noticeable but all the same there. There is the occasional
minor dint to the stand base.
A lovely
oil lamp in working order.
