Heavy
And Imposing Hinks & Son Banquet Oil Lamp And Shade
This
rare, really outstanding and imposing oil lamp weighing 6 kilograms
and standing 27 inches to the top of the chimney
is in beautiful order. It most likely dates from the late Victorian
era approaching 1900.
You’ll
see a beautiful cast brass stand gently enclosing a ceramic
hand painted floral insert. This supports a really fine clear
cut glass fount of generous proportion.
Note
the Hinks number 2 burner with two flat wicks side by side.
This is an extremely rare and unusual example, having an almost unheard of screw
in base instead of the usual bayonet fitting! The 'Hinks
No2' logo is on the ceramic wick winder knob and 'Hinks Patent'
is also on the burner separator strip.
Joseph
Hinks was probably the most prestigious oil lamp maker ever – he
actually invented the twin wick burner. You’ll see this
is a lifter type burner so the complete top can be raised by
a lever key to light the wicks without having to remove chimney
or shade. An excellent smooth running snuffer safety assembly
complete with original brass droplet is another great feature.
The
shade is also exceptional being of the closed tulip (bee hive)
type. It’s a lovely shade with a floral pattern finely
embossed and Cranes flying over water. Again probably the nicest
and best of it's type I have seen.
The
lamp has been serviced and lightly cleaned and retains it's
antique personality perfectly.
This
outstanding oil lamp is exceptionally heavy and although it
can be disassembled is quite complicated to put back together.
It is not a good candidate to be shipped by post so I have
marked it for personal collection from us at Castlemorton,
near Malvern, Worcestershire.
Purchasers
would be welcome to arrange for their own carrier to collect
and to insure the lamp for the journey. I would be pleased
to pack lamp and shade securely for this purpose.

lovely oil lamp in good working order.
